Open Discussion

The environment surrounding the performing arts is rapidly changing along with major social trends. Responding to domestic systems and laws such as the tax system and the new law on freelance workers. Global issues such as inflation, rising fuel costs, climate change, and the rise of AI have also become inseparable from creative and performing activities.
Are we providing sufficient and transparent opportunities for discussion of the various issues related to the performing arts?
ON-PAM was established in February 2013 to “envision the future 10 to 20 years into the future. Now, 10 years after its establishment, we are reaffirming our mission and inviting guests from each region to join our “committee”.

Program① Online Round Table:
Talking about producers’ network in Asia – Focus on the case of APP
In this Online Round Table session hosted by ON-PAM (Open Network for Performing Arts management), we will be looking at the network of producers in Asia through the case of APP (Asian Producers’ Platform). APP was launched in 2014 by independent producers working internationally in Asia. More than 100 Asian producers and producers have participated in the seven camps held so far, and participants continue to collaborate with each other on projects and exchange ideas outside of the camps. We will talk to the guests from the APP participants and organizers to discuss their experiences in APP and the potentials of the network that APP has cultivated.

Annette Shun Wah
Annette Shun Wah is a writer, creative producer, theatre maker and festival director with an extensive career in radio, television and theatre.  From 2020-2023 she was Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival, Australia’s largest annual multi-arts festival framed by the cultural connections between Australia and Asia.  Previously Annette led Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) championing Asian Australian stories and artists to take their place on main stages and major festivals. For CAAP she co-directed several productions with acclaimed photographer and storyteller William Yang.  Annette is a non-executive director on the boards of Sydney Theatre Company and the National Film and Sound Archive.  She has been a member of the Asian Producers Platform since 2014.

Cui Yin
Cui is an in(ter)dependent producer and facilitator. She is interested in the intersections between art, anthropology, and social action, and in finding ways to make good art happen, better. She has produced for / with independent artists across disciplines, and for platforms and organisations including da:ns fest by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, The Substation, Dance Nucleus, NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, Asian Film Archive, and Singapore International Festival of Arts. She is an organising member of Producers SG, a Planning Team member of the Asian Producers’ Platform, and an international associate of Asia-Art-Activism. http://tsuei.co

E-Jan Tan
Tan E-Jan (Malaysia) is founder and director of In Situ, an arts management consultancy specializes in facilitating international exchange and collaborations between Southeast Asia and the world at large. She is also co-founder and creative producer of Toccata Studio, a not-for-profit creative incubator dedicated to creative research and development.

E-Jan was invited as panel speakers on international platforms, including IETM Satellite meeting and PAMS in South Korea and TPAM in Japan. A proud alumni of ISPA Global Fellowship and Arts Leadership programme by Australia Council for the Arts, E-Jan is a planning team member of the Asian Producers’ Platform (APP), IETM Global Connector and currently pursuing MA in Arts and Culture Management with Lüneburg University, Germany.

Fuyuko Mezawa
Fuyuko Mezawa was born in Tokyo and has lived in The Netherlnds and Luxemburg for 10 years in childhood. She practiced several dance such as Classical ballet, Jazz dance and Hip hop then.  In Oberlin University, She started to dance Contemporary dance and became a member of Dance Company Baobab lead by Wataru Kitao. Since 2016, Baobab organizes dance festival “DANCExScrum!!!” biennially. As her career, She joined theater drama company and work as an artist management agent. She became independent manager and producer in 2017 and starts to join the dance project of theater and festivals domestics and overseas. She has join several international community such as Asia Producers Platforms Camp, European Festival Academy and others.

Kei Saito
Performing arts administrator/producer. He moved to Tottori from Tokyo in 2006 to take part in starting BIRD Theatre Company/BIRD Theatre and, for ten years, he has managed numerous programmes and projects. From March 2018 to February 2019, he was at Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland, as a guest producer. He then spent three years from January 2020 to March 2023 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto working as a member of producing team. He now works freelance based in Chizu, Tottori. For ON-PAM, he has served as a Board Member since its foundation in 2013 to 2022.

ON-PAM (Open Network for Performing Arts Management) hosts this Roundtable session to look at the international exchanges of performing arts works over the Covid-affected period and reconsider the value of performing outside of one’s own locality to meet new audiences.

June Tan
June Tan, based in Kuala Lumpur, is a member of the arts collective Five Arts Centre. June studied Biology at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. Since 1997 while working in the corporate world, June has stage-managed, tour-managed, produced and programmed numerous local and international productions. From 2018-2020 June was TPAM Director for TPAM in Yokohama, a platform reflecting contemporary thinking in Asia and the world. June is also active in ReformARTsi, a coalition advocating for policy change in the arts and also in environmental activism with Pertahankan Hutan Simpan Kuala Langat Utara and Gabungan Darurat Iklim Malaysia. June is also a scriptwriter for film (Interchange, Spilt Gravy) and has written original content for the regional streaming platforms (Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Viu)

Juliet Knapp
Kyoto Experiment Co-director. Born in Fukuoka. Graduated Oxford University with a BA in English Literature and Language. From 2015-2017 she worked as communications manager and project manager for music and performance at Ryoji Ikeda Studio. She has been involved as a member of the PR team at Kyoto Experiment since 2017 and is co-director since 2020. Likes Yorkshire Tea.

Program③ Symposium:Theaters/Art Centers as Sites of Self-Governance
What is the role of theaters/art centers as places that connect performing arts and local communities? Can it be a “self-governing place” shared with diverse people involved in the region and community, with the cultural administration of the national and local governments as a backdrop? We will invite guest speakers who are practitioners of opening theaters/art centers in various forms and directions and updating existing systems and operations, and talk about the possibilities that can be seen from their activities.

Hirofumi Arai
Born in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. After working in the production department of the SPAC (Shizuoka Performing Arts Center), he founded the cultural project group “Theater & Arts Ueda” in Ueda City. In 2016, he renovated a vacant store in the central shopping street of Ueda City and opened “SAI NO TSUNO (SAI NO TSUNO is Rhinoceros horn in English),” a private cultural facility equipped with an event space and guesthouse that can be used for theater and live performances. It is operated as a place for various expressive activities and exchange between local residents and artists. He is a member of the Ueda City Exchange Culture and Arts Center Management Council.Born in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. Tatsuki Hayashi
Tatsuki Hayashi is the Program Director at Naha Cultural Arts Theater, NAHArt, in Okinawa. He is also known as the Japanese translator of works by Elfriede Jelinek and Hans-Thies Lehmann. Tatsuki Hayashi joined Akira Takayama’s theater unit, Port B, in 2005, and Chiaki Soma’s NPO Arts Commons Tokyo in 2014. He worked as a dramaturge at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt, Germany from 2019 to 2021 before assuming his current position in 2022.

Yukie Mitomi
Yukie Mitomi is manager of Arts Center Akita, a non-profit organization which runs various community outreach programs and research projects of Akita University of Art. She has also been working for the Akita City Cultural Creation Center since 2021. Born in Shizuoka, Japan. She graduated from Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University. Before joining Arts Center Akita, she worked for the Japan Foundation (2006-2016) and Global Fund for Education Assistance (BEYOND Tomorrow)(2016-2017).

Aiko Masuda
Born in Shizuoka, Japan. Graduated from Waseda University, Faculty of Literature I. Joined the Asahi Shimbun in 2003. After working at the Toyama General Bureau, Nagoya Head Office, and Osaka Head Office, she is currently in charge of theater at the Culture Department of the Tokyo Head Office. She is interested in and continues to cover issues related to the environment for creation and appreciation of theater and the relationship between theater and society, such as the public theaters, including the artistic director system, theater festivals in various regions, and measures against harassment in the theater world.

Program⑤ Round Tabel:Next Producers Meeting 2023 in Yokohama
A review session of the Co-Creation Camp (CCC) for co-creating arts managers and artists, jointly organised by the Toyooka Theatre Festival and ON-PAM in 2023. The CCC created a time for the participants to share their values and philosophies, and to expand their uniqueness and potential as a team. In this round table, together with the programme participants, we will discuss the inspiration gained from the camps in Tokyo and Toyooka, as well as future prospects. It will also be an opportunity to share ideas, expectations and visions for where the generation of CCC participants are now and for building a network of the next generation of arts managers.

Momo Sakamoto
Born in 1988. Stage producer. While a student at Nihon University College of Art, Department of Drama, she worked as an assistant director for student productions, and also worked in the production and directing departments of external and commercial theater productions. Part-time lecturer at Tama Art University, Department of Theatre and Dance Design. Board member of the Open Network for Performing Arts Management (ON-PAM).

Mazuki OkuraBorn in Tokyo, Japan in 1992.
Has been involved in theater as an actor and director since high school theater, and has been working as a producer of a theater company’s production since 2020. Currently studying production work while working as an assistant producer on outside performances.

Ayano Okawa
She has produced all of the Fumen Kaiga’s performances since its debut, and also takes stage photographs. Graduated from Nihon University College of Art, Department of Theatre Arts, Planning and Production Course. She studied abroad in England during her junior year of college, and after returning to Japan, she worked as an assistant at precog Inc. After graduating from university, she moved to an island in the Seto Inland Sea to work and continue her activities of Fumen Kaiga.

河崎正太郎(譜面絵画制作)
Born in 1999.
In high school, experienced community dance at care homes and special needs schools, and social inclusion research through art.
While in college, he participated in Fumen Kaiga. After graduating from university, worked for two years at a public theater, where he worked to revitalize places where artists and local residents could meet, including performance projects and outreach programs for elementary and junior high schools. After leaving the company, he has been working as a producer not only for performances but also for managing theater festivals.
